The cemetery was established in 1899 and since then, many prominent and notorious Australians have been laid to rest here. One of the most visited gravesites in Australia is that of rock band AC/DC's lead singer Bon Scott who was laid to rest at Fremantle Cemetery in 1980. The gravesite has become a cultural landmark and has been heritage listed by the National Trust. Fans of Bon Scott can also visit a tribute statue to the late singer in Fremantle Fisherman's Wharf. The cemetery is also home to the late bushranger Moondyne Joe and engineer C.Y. O'Connor who created Fremantle Harbour and the world's longest water main, the Goldfields Pipeline. Most recently, Australian actor Heath Ledger was cremated at the cemetery's crematorium.
